At age 20, Alan Milliner retired from playing and took up refereeing full-time and quickly progressed through the ranks, overcoming a number of injuries to become one of the top officials in Australia and being added to the FIFA International Referees List in 2014.On the 4th of April 2017, Alan Milliner was appointed as one of the inaugural Video assistant referee (VAR's) in the Hyundai A-League, the first top-tier football league in the world to implement the technology.
