They opened the scoring with a goal by Mark Hateley in the 30th minute, a finish from six yards after a low cross from the left. Ally McCoist made it 2–0 with a half volley, before Andy Smith scored a consolation goal from outside the box. Rangers' route to the final was unusual in that they faced Scottish Premier Division opposition in every round, beating Aberdeen, Motherwell, St Johnstone and Celtic before facing Airdrie.
